Buying used robotics parts: inspection checklist
Used components can reduce cost and lead time, but condition and compatibility should be documented before installation.
Before buying
- Match the complete Part #, manufacturer and hardware revision.
- Ask for current photos of labels, connectors, mounting surfaces and wear points.
- Request operating hours, removal reason, storage conditions and test results.
- Check voltage, load, protocol, firmware and environmental requirements.
- Confirm included cables, accessories and mounting hardware.
Category-specific checks
For actuators, check backlash, seals, noise and travel. For sensors, request a recent functional reading. For controllers, verify firmware and locked credentials. For batteries and power equipment, ask about age, cycle count and safe shipping restrictions.
On arrival
Inspect for shipping damage before energizing. Compare the received label to the listing and test the component in a controlled setup using manufacturer limits.
